The World of Designers Guild

Guest blog: Sacha Walckhoff

JULY 2019

This season we launched the 'Paradis Babares' collection. A beguiling and beautiful collection that celebrates the natural harmonies and rhythms of a whimsical and spirited world - as seen through the inimitable Christian Lacroix Maison eye, directed by Creative Director Sacha Walckhoff.

We ask him his thoughts about the collection and what inspires him:

What was the inspiration behind Paradis Barbares?

I really see this collection as a return to the origins of the House and its founding principle: since it's very first Haute-Couture presentations, the House has combined the raw with the sophisticated to create an unrivaled aesthetic style. I wanted it to be a homage to our House's beginnings, with its private rooms designed by Garouste & Bonetti, a duo of artists and protagonists. featuring free lines called "New Barbarians". The free forms they used inspired this collection combining curves and waves, reminiscent of Jacques Couëlle’s architecture, the backdrop to this new adventure.

What is your favourite design from your SS19 collection?

Well I love all of them! We have been working with Tricia Guild and her team for almost 10 years now, next year will be our 10th collection together, so it is too difficult to choose just one design!

How do you think fashion & culture influences design?

Today, information is at lightening speed and there are many ways to get it, even if you don't ask for it! Everything has an influence and I am quite keen in building the stories I am developing for Lacroix in a singular way, in order to create trends instead of following them.

Three most inspiring places to visit in the World?

It is always exciting to travel overseas... The flea markets in Tokyo (I have found ancient hand painted kimonos which were the inspiration for our Geisha fabric design, from a previous collection). Tecopa, a small deserted resort near the death valley which is the perfect retreat to find peace and no wifi connections - freedom!
